‘CEAT Mumbai Xpress Rally 2008’ reached Mumbai
The ‘CEAT Mumbai Xpress Autorickshaw Rally 2008’ co-organised by Ceat Ltd & Chennai Event Management Services touched Mumbai its final destination.
The rally was a huge success with all the 18 teams and 39 participants (Autorickshaw drivers) including 7 women competing under tough climatic and road condition and completing the rally. The rally covered a distance of 2000 kms spanning over 14 days. The rally concluded in Mumbai after traversing the rough terrains of South Central and Western India – Chennai, Vellore, Bangalore, Hassan, Mangalore, Bhatkal, Panaji, Tarkali, Ratnagiri, Mahad and Alibaug. The rally had participants from 10 different countries – India, Britain, America, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Germany, Norway, Hungary and Spain – vying for the winning position.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shujaul Rehman, General Manager-Sales, CEAT said, “The CEAT Mumbai Xpress – 2008 is an international amateur motor rally which is a distinct race for the rally lovers who like the off-beat. We are happy with the successful completion of the rally. The distance covered by the rally was long & challenging and it was excessively hard on tyres. Road safety being our fundamental right and essential condition for sustainable development of society, CEAT tyres are specially designed to withstand the rigors of tough driving like this rally and the participants completed the rally without any trouble or mishaps”
He further added, “This rally focussed on raising money to improve the lifestyles and educational opportunities of India’s children, promote Road Safety, and raise the profile of the growing trend of Adventure Tourism.
The highlight of the rally was its central goal of – Adopt A Village program, where each competing team were assigned a specific village along the route. They halted during the rally to deliver supplies and badly needed aid that they have funded. This initiative is an attempt to increase literacy and decrease child labour. This initiative was organised in partnership with Madras MidTown RoundTable – 42 (MMRT-42)
Autorickshaws which are an iconic vehicle on Indian roads have completed 51 years as a convenient mode of transport for short distance travel. But the ‘CEAT Mumbai Xpress – 2008’ has transformed the Autorickshaw from a utilitarian means of transport to a vehicle for adventure sports and has drawn participation from across the globe, who are excited about the this unique rally, which is one of its kind in the world.
Teams had the opportunity to consult with the community leaders of that village months in advance, to discover what particular resources the village most badly needs. All the participants have been encouraged to spend the months prior to the event’, in fund raising activities to be able to purchase these resources which will be carried along the route of the rally for their village.
This once-in-a-lifetime, fourteen -stage rally has travelled across four provinces of India and through a vast and diverse array of landscapes, from coastlines and mountain ranges, to bustling metropolises. It was an arduous challenge, certainly not for the faint hearted, but competition is always fun and brings participants from all walks of life together to challenge for the title of the CEAT Mumbai Xpress Rally 2008 World Champion.
Along the way, competitors complete physical and intellectual tasks, in addition to the travails involved in navigating each stage of the rally and keeping their auto rickshaw on the road. Finally, after traversing each day’s stunning landscape and completing the adventures that lie along the route, by nightfall they will party the summer night away with the other participants that has been organised at Hotel J W Marriot at 7p.m.
