NPCIL, NTPC in JV to set up power plants
Public sector firms Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and National Thermal Power Corporation, the country’s largest power producer, have signed an agreement to jointly produce nuclear power plants.Under the agreement, the companies will set up a joint venture firm in which NPCIL will hold the majority 51 per cent stake and NTPC will hold the remaining 49 per cent. The JV will set up a 2,000 Mw nuclear power plant at a location to be finalised later, Press Information Bureau said in a statement issued here today.
This is the first joint venture in the country’s nuclear power sector. NPCIL is the country’s only nuclear power producer.
NPCIL is currently the sole agency generating nuclear power in country with a capacity of about 4,120 Mw.
Earlier this month, NPCIL had signed another agreement with French Energy major Areva for supply of two European pressurised reactors of 1,650 Mw capacity each. The reactors are for the nuclear power plant being set up by NPCIL at Jaitapur, Maharashtra.
