New Delhi: Bollywood’s Munnabhai Sanjay Dutt who is UNESCO’s goodwill ambassador to fight against malnutrition is likely to have a meeting with newly elected President of the United States – Barak Obama. The meeting is likely to be in February and in New York. Sanjay is out of bail in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

A Supreme Court Bench headed by Chief Justice of India K. G. Balakrishnan and Justices P. Sathasivam and J. M. Panchal gave him the green signal to go abroad from January 15 to February 15 asking him to surrender his passport on return to the CBI’s Special Task Force, Mumbai, by February 28.

Senior advocate Fali S. Nariman told the court that as a consequence of being appointed as UN’s Goodwill Ambassador on malnutrition, Dutt’s presence was required in United States in the first week of February.

He said the Director General, Head of Observer Delegation to United Nations Economic and Social Council, has addressed a letter to Sanjay in this regard.

The letter dated January 2 from UNESCO to Sanjay, on behalf of Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition, invited the Bollywood star to join the gathering of goodwill ambassadors, including US president-elect Barack Obama’s grandmother Sarah Obama, in New York in the first week of February 2009.

The UN communication informed Sanjay that “among other distinguished people, the event shall also feature former US president Bill Clinton and recently appointed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along with the Obama family, and NY state governor, who all have confirmed their attendance to extend their support and cooperation.”

The actor will also be needed for the shooting of his two new films – Luck and Lamha – in Bangkok, South Africa and United Kingdom, the advocate said.

Sanjay, who was convicted and sentenced to six years imprisonment under Arms Act for possessing illegal weapons in connection with 1993 Mumbai blasts case, was granted bail after he filed an appeal against the verdict of the TADA court.

He was, however, absolved of the serious offence under the TADA.

Sanjay, 50, has been regularly allowed to go abroad for his films after filing an affidavit stating that he would return to the country after completing his work.

While granting bail to the actor on November 27, 2007, the court had directed him to surrender his passport and asked him not to leave the country without its permission.

The CBI had not opposed his bail maintaining that he was entitled for the relief since he was guilty of a less serious offence.

The Bollywood star, who was sentenced in July 2007, had spent 18 months in jail during the pendency of the trial.

Priya ‘disappointed’: Congress party Member of Parliament Priya Dutt has expressed her disappointment over her actor-brother Sanjay’s decision to associate with the Sawajwadi Party for the Lok Sabha polls.

“Definitely there is disappointment. We have always been a Congress family. I hope he would have fought for the Congress party,” Priya, a sitting MP from northwest Mumbai, said.

She stressed that her brother’s decision to associate with the Samajwadi Party was completely an individual one and there was no family feud over it.

“There is no family feud. Everybody is free to take a decision for himself or herself. This is Sanjay’s decision and he has to take responsibility for this,” she said.

Priya declined to comment when asked if Sanjay’s wife Manyata had played any role in her brother’s decision.

She said she was misinterpreted by a section of the media about her views on Sanjay’s move.
“Everyone has a right to take his own individual decision. I don’t want to pass judgment on anybody’s life. But at the time of crisis, we are one as a family,” she said.

Asked whether her brother decided to join the Samajwadi Party as the Congress ‘did not stand by him’ Sanjya said, “I do not think that is true”.

Priya said that her parents’ name should not be dragged into any controversy.

“I have never brought my family to public life. My parents and family should not be brought into any controversy,” she said.

Priya added that Sanjay’s decision to associate with the Samajwadi Party had not been discussed within the family.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh was quick to score a political point.

“Priya should not be disappointed and should know that it is because of our support that the Congress government is surviving at the centre,” Amar Singh told reporters in New Delhi.

Sanjay and Priya Dutt are the children of late actor and Congress veteran Sunil Dutt, who was India’s sports minister when he died. Their mother and actress Nargis was an MP in the Rajya Sabha.

While Sanjay was away in Srinagar shooting for a movie, Priya told reporters: “Neither Sanjay nor (his wife) Manyata have confirmed that he is contesting the election. Just like their marriage, I came to know about it through the media.”

Last week, Amar Singh announced that Sanjay Dutt would be the Samajwadi Party candidate for the Lok Sabha Lucknow seat. If he was not allowed to contest because of a criminal case against him, Manyata would be the candidate, Amar Singh added.

Just a day after the Samajwadi Party indicated its plans to pit its state party chief Abu Asim Azmi from Mumbai North-West constituency, Priya Dutt was Wednesday quoted as saying that her brother had been “manipulated” into contesting on Samajwadi Party ticket by his wife Manyata.

Sanjay has said that he will speak on the controversy when he returns to Mumbai. “I don’t want to comment on anything. I will talk once I am back in Mumbai.”

In New Delhi, Congress MP Satyavrat Chaturvedi fired a salvo at Amar Singh, asking the Samajwadi Party leader to go for a “physical and mental check-up”.
