Work on the 5,000 TCD (tonnes crushing per day) state-of-the-art, integrated sugar complex of Empee Sugars and Chemicals Limited at Edaikal in Ambasamudram taluk of Tirunelveli district is going on in full swing with the company having already raised 1,000 acres of seed cane out of the total requirement of 2,000 acres. The entire quantity of seed cane will be raised by September and the company will start commercial planting from October 2008.

The company is adopting corporate/ contract farming on the large tracts of land along with conventional agricultural practices. “We have gone ahead with the new concept of corporate/ contract farming to meet the urgency of increasing production and productivity, reduce expenditure as well as increase revenues for the farmers and the company,” Empee Sugars and Chemicals Ltd Joint Managing Director K Jayachandran said.

The method will help the company overcome the ever-increasing demand for farm laborers. The method is also easy to implement in Tirunelveli district because of the large land holdings with virgin soil and subsoil water availability. The mechanization of farming operations will be a big boon for farmers of the region. The company will cultivate the large tracts of land with most modern equipment and the benefits reaped will be shared with the farmers too.

“We have started mechanized ploughing, planting and inter-cultivation operations. We have made arrangements for getting machines for harvesting cane and transporting the same to factories. In fact, we have already received one harvesting machine in Nayudupet, which is operational. We have ordered for five more such machines from Japan,” he said.

With the emphasis on improving productivity at optimum costs, the company is also introducing subsoil drip irrigation. This will reduce water consumption and will help effectively use manure through drip. This system will help achieve one plant crop with three to four ratoon crops, which will reduce cane cultivation cost.

The company has already placed orders for major equipment viz., boilers, turbines, mills, electrical gadgets and boiling house. The same will be erected with the latest technology to reduce production cost and ultimately the cost of the final product. The orders have been placed under an assured delivery schedule to enable the company commission the integrated complex by November 2009.

The location of the factory is very ideal with multiple advantages. “The factory is situated in the middle of cane cultivation area. The nearest sub-station to which the power generated from the co-generation plant will be synchronized is just three kilometres away. The perennial river Tamarabarani and two other rivers form a confluence just six kms away from the factory site. This will ensure more than adequate water that will be required for cane cultivation and factory operations.

The port city of Tuticorin is just 70 kms away and this will ensure comfortable access to import/ export activities for raw sugar, finished product, ethanol and import of coal if required. Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Nagercoil are also within close proximity. The factory is also the closest to Kerala markets, which has no sugar factories and is dependent on other states to meet its sugar needs.

“We expect a transport benefit of around Rs 25 per quintal as our factory is easily approachable to Trivandrum, Kollam and Kochi.” Mr. Jayachandran said.
