Empee Sugars and Chemicals Limited reported a net sales of Rs 5,962.22 lakh for the year ended June 30, 2008 as compared to Rs 5,752.14 lakh during the corresponding period of the previous year. For the quarter ended June 30, the net sales was Rs 1,278.81 lakh as compared to Rs 1,913.71 during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The profit after tax for the year ended June 30 was up nearly 50 per cent at Rs 129.66 lakh as against Rs 87.57 lakh during the corresponding period of the previous year. However, the profit after tax for the quarter was Rs 95.97 lakh as compared to Rs 211.99 during the corresponding period of the previous year.

“The profitability of the sugar segment during the last quarter was affected by the surplus availability of sugar and consequent low sugar prices, both in the domestic and international market. However, with the reduced sugar production in India and the diversion of cane for ethanol in Brazil sugar supply is expected to fall and therefore the prices will firm up. This trend of shortage of sugar is expected to continue for at least two to three years which will be a boon to the sugar industry,” Empee Sugars and Chemicals Ltd Chairman and Managing Director M. P. Purushothaman said.

The Company also expects to considerably improve its performance after the launch of its 5000 TCD (expandable to 8,000 TCD) integrated sugar complex with facilities for 100 KLPD distillery and 50 MW co-generation at Edaikal in Ambasamudram taluk of Tirunelveli district in 2009. This region is well suited for cultivation of cane and is also an excellent location from a logistics point of view.
