CII organizes National Skills Competitions
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organizing the 20th National Work Skills Competition and 2nd WorldSkills India Competitions at Bangalore from 25th February to 28th February, 2008. More than 130 workmen from all over the country will be competing for National Honours in 19 different skill categories. These competitions are being organized by CII Institute of Quality in association with DGET, Government of India.
Skills covering Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Computer disciplines shall be contested by competitors from companies including Tata Motors, MICO, Denso India, DCM Sri Ram, Hindalco, Tata Steel, Hero Honda, Godrej, Bhillai Steel Plant, Bajaj Auto, GRSE and Carborandum Universal among others.
Though the Indian economy has been registering impressive growth rates, our labour productivity is the lowest amongst the developing nations. For sustainable competitiveness it is imperative to raise the skill standards of our workmen to world class level. CII has set WorldSkills India to raise skill standards to World Class level and expand the competition to cover new skills required for our growing economy. CII IQ is working closely with World Skills International, a world body dedicated to the enhancement of skills amongst its fifty member countries.
This year for the first time, CII is holding the competition as per rigorous pattern of WorldSkills International. More than thirty five young workmen, below twenty two years old , are participating in six different skills to challenge worldskill standards as a run up to participation in the next WorldSkills International Competition to be held in Calgary Canada in 2009.
Apart from recognizing the outstanding workmen and instilling pride in skills, the performance of competitors provides a good indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of our Vocational Training System. As the country is making huge investments in up-grading the training infrastructure, National WorldSkills Competition will provide an objective assessment of the nation’s progress on upgrading the skills of our youth and make continual improvements.
