Hi lalith, you can short sell any share whether you currently hold it or not. After short sell your account will show you are holding 10 scrips, and in addition holding short position of whatever number.

    CB, replies: Hi Mathew, thanks..

Hi lalith, it is not done that way. And in effect it doesn't matter actually. Say you have 10 X shares bought at Rs.100. Now the market price is Rs. 150. You short sell 10 at 150 expecting the market to go down. Instead it goes up. Now you need to cover your short position. It is not ideal (in theory) to give your shares bought at Rs.100 to cover it. What you should do is cover your short position by buying back at the current market price of 160. If you don't have money to buy back, you sell your original shares (bought at 100) for 160 and then cover your position. As these shares do not have a physical presence it is not possible to cover your short position with the particular shares you are originally having.

    CB, replies: Hi Mathew, thanks..

Hi lalith, Short selling is something I have not mastered yet. You will have to seek help from CB. But generally it looks not a good idea to short sell when the markets are looking positive.

    CB, replies: Hi Mathew, thanks..
