Tata veteran appointed to lead Starbucks India JV
02 October 2012
Long-serving Tata executive Avani Saglani Davda has been appointed as the chief executive of Starbucks’ new India joint venture with the Tata Global Beverages.
Davda, a Tata veteran of over 10 years, will head up Tata Starbucks Limited, a 50/50 joint venture between the coffee shop chain and Tetley and Eight O’ Clock coffee producer Tata Global Beverages. The firm has outlined plans to open 50 coffee houses across the country and will open its first outlet in Mumbai by the end of October.
“We are delighted to be able to announce our progress toward opening our first store in India and to introduce locally sourced espresso,” said John Culver, Starbucks China and Asia Pacific’s president.
“Being able to use the highest quality espresso, sourced and roasted in India, is an important part of delivering a locally relevant experience to our customers in the market.”
Tea remains India’s favourite drink but Starbucks will aim to emulate the growth of its business in China, where the firm is on-track to have 1,500 outlets by 2015. 25% of Starbucks’ new store openings this year will be in China.
