stocks with a high proportion of pledged promoter shares are particularly vulnerable in a bear market. And bears know that only too well. The bull market of 2007-08 collapsed with the massive unwinding of positions in the derivatives segment. This time, outstanding positions in the derivative positions is not all that huge, but the borrowing binge of many promoters has provided bears with ammunition to go after their stock.

Typically, bears start short selling the stock futures first. Once the stock futures price starts to weaken, it has a rub off effect on the stock price as well. That is because the differential between the cash and futures price is usually between 0.5% and 1%. If the stock futures price slips, the cash market price will fall proportionately.

By hammering the futures prices, bears drive down the stock price. Once the stock price falls below a certain price, promoters will start getting margin calls from the lenders they have pledged shares with. Promoters then have to either repay a part of the loan or deposit more shares with the lender, as collateral. If the promoters fail to do either, the lenders will dump the shares in the market to recover their money. And that is exactly what the bears want. If the prices collapse, they will square off their positions at a neat profit.

CB, replies: Hi pooja1981, yes. one can short ongc
