Hi CB, I wd like to know ,when exactly do we lose money while writing 'options ' [sell]....?
If in case I sell a CE option of a stock ,when the cmp of the stock is at that price ...and am expecting the price to fall before expiry..and ,if in case the price remains the same ..will I gain ,even so..due to decay factor...pl?

CB, replies: Hi Gitanjali, if due to decay price falls, you will gain. if it remains same or moves higher, you will be at a loss

Hi Gitanjali, Yes what you have said is correct if and only if the price of the underlying security remains the same or falls. Now, price remaining the same is very rare because any security which has "Futures" and "Options" associated with it will be volatile. Your only bet will be the price decrease of the underlying security. If this is the scenario, then automatically the premium of the option (CE in your case) will fall. Plus with passage of time, theta decay will be there.
BUT, overall the scenario you mentioned is a very risky proposition. Just imagine, what if the price of the underlying security rises. If the price goes above the "Strike Price" of the CE you sold, your CE will become "In-the Money". Now, you have the potential of "UNLIMITED LOSS" as long as the CE is ITM.
Therefore your scenario is --- LIMITED GAINS (from the premium you received while writing the CE) but potential for UNLIMITED LOSS. Plz remember, nobody can ever be certain that the price of the underlying security will NEVER cross the STRIKE PRICE of the sold CE...
    [ Hope this helps :) ]

CB, replies: Hi Abdullah, thanks for the detailed update
