Twelve coaches of Coromandel Express derail in Orissa, many dead
BHUBANESWAR: Within hours of the interim railway budget, in which railway minister Lalu Prasad gloated over the “improved” safety record of the network, twelve coaches of Coromandel Express, running between Howrah and Chennai have derailed near Jajpur in Orissa.
At least 10 persons have died and 70 injured in the accident, which occurred about 120 kms from Bhubaneswar at 7:50pm.
Orissa DGP Manmohan Praharaj said the accident happened at a spot one km from the Jajpur Road railway station.
Senior railway and police officials have rushed to the accident site. Several passengers are still believed to be trapped.
Earlier in the day railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav presented his interim Railway Budget for 2009-2010. During the course of his presentation, he said that in the last five years, there has been a significant improvement in railway safety and a steep reduction in the number of railway accidents.
In the Lok Sabha today, he said the number of consequential accidents had come down to 194 in 2007-08, as against 325 in 2003-04.
The railway minister said this declining trend is continuing in the current year (2008-09) also as the number of consequential train accidents during April-November has decreased to 117 as compared to 138 during the corresponding period in the previous year.
