Ranbaxy honours Indian Scientists & Young Science Scholars
Ranbaxy Science Foundation (RSF), a non-profit organization set-up by Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited (RLL), today announced its 19th Annual Research Awards for the year 2006 to the Indian Scientists in recognition of their outstanding research contributions made in the fields of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Foundation also announced its Ist Annual Science Scholarship Awards to the young and brilliant upcoming new generation of scientists.
The Awards were presented by renowned Nobel Laureate Prof. David Baltimore, President Emeritus, Robert Andrews Millikan Professor of Biology, California Institute of Technology, USA at a special function held today at the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi. A total of 5 Scientists and 4 Science Scholars were honoured with the awards.

Basic Research
Dr. Ashok R. Venkitaraman, The Ursula Zoellner Professor of Cancer Research, University of Cambridge, School of Clinical Medicine, UK and
Dr. Amitabha Chattopadhyay, Deputy Director, Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, Hyderabad.
Dr. Venkitaraman receives the award for his contributions in understanding the molecular basis of immune recognition and elucidating the genetic basis of cancer
Dr. Chattopadhyay receives the award for his outstanding contributions in establishing the role of hippocampal serotonin1 receptor as a useful system to address important disease related mechanisms.
Medical Research
Dr. Gautam Chaudhuri, Professor, Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology and Professor and Executive Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, USA, receives the award in the field of Medical Sciences- Medical Research for his outstanding research contributions in elucidating the pharmacology of VEGF which lead to the discovery of important antihypertensive drugs.
Clinical Research
Dr. Subrat Kumar Acharya, Professor & Head, Department of Gastroenterology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi receives the award in the field of Medical Sciences-Clinical Research for his outstanding work in the area of acute liver diseases.
Pharmaceutical Sciences
In the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Professor of Molecular & Cellular Oncology, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, U.S.A. receives the award for his contributions in the field of cellular signaling systems which may be responsible for cancer cell metastases.
