JK Tyre in its endeavor to award the excellence in Auto Industry partners yet another significant and credible event of the country – ‘2008 Indian Motorcycle of the Year award.’ The award is an expert, independent judgment of all new motorcycles launched in the calendar year in India. The award has been judged by a panel of senior motoring journalists from leading automobile magazines in India. In its inaugural year, the Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi trounced the competition to win the coveted title – Indian Motorcycle of the Year. The Pulsar 220 is India’s first high-performance sports bike to feature fuel injection, apart from other technical innovations such as oil cooler, tubeless tyres, clip on handlebars, digital speedo, LED tail lamps, gas charged rear shock absorbers, front and rear disc brake and many more.

Under the IMOTY banner all the recognized automotive magazines in the country – Auto India, Autocar India, B S Motoring, Bike India, Overdrive and Top Gear India – have come together to crown the definitive, the most outstanding, motorcycle to be introduced in the market each year. Each magazine has appointed one editorial member with a minimum of four years experience of riding and testing motorcycles to be part of the IMOTY jury and this year’s jury panel includes Rishad Cooper (Autocar India), Aspi Bhathena (Bike India), Shubhabrata Marmar (BS Motoring), Sirish Chandran (Overdrive) and Girish Karkera (Top Gear India).

Speaking at the award ceremony, Mr. A.S.Mehta, Director Marketing, JK Tyre & Industries Ltd., said, “This award truly reflects the choice of the experts. The experts judged the motorbikes on various parameters such as price, fuel efficiency, design, comfort, safety, maneuverability, performance, functionality, environmental responsibility and rider satisfaction among others. In addition, technical innovation and value for money were particularly important factors while deciding on the winner.

The motorcycles shortlisted for this years award were launched in calendar year 2007 and, if not an all-new bike, had to have a significant mechanical changes (engine/cycle parts) that altered the positioning of the bike. The shortlist for the 2008 IMOTY included the Bajaj XCD125 DTS-Si, Bajaj 200DTS-i, Bajaj 220 DTS-i, Bajaj Avenger 200 DTS-i, Bajaj Discover 135 DTS-i, Hero Honda Hunk, Hero Honda Splendor NXG, REML Bullet 500 LB and TVS Apache 160 RTR.

The jury members were tasked with pronouncing a single decisive winner and the voting process has been designed specifically for this purpose, modeled along the lines of the ICOTY scoring process.
