GAIL launches e-Shiksha Project

GAIL (India) Limited today launched a major education initiative – ‘e-Shiksha’ for villages in and around its major plants at Pata in U.P. and Vijaipur in M.P. Shri B.C. Tripathi, Director (Marketing), GAIL flagged off two Mobile Computer Aided Learning Centers costing over Rs. 60 lakhs in Noida today to mark the launch of the ‘e-Shiksha’ programme.

The e- Shiksha programme is part of the CSR activities and is aimed at imparting basic computer knowledge in local language to school students and to school dropouts in rural areas in the vicinity of GAIL’s plants at Pata and Vijaipur.

GAIL has contributed Rs. 63 lakhs for the Mobile Computer Aided Learning Centers which includes two buses at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs, each equipped with 18 laptops, a Generator and AC system. Contribution towards recurring cost for one year for running the education programme is Rs.6.5 lakh for each bus.

Under the e-Shiksha programme, computer classes will be conducted on “Mobile Computer Aided Learning Center” in the villages surrounding the work centers at Pata and Vijaipur. The Center will have a qualified computer instructor to teach the children. The bus specially designed and fabricated for the purpose can accommodate 30 learners at any given time. The bus will move from one school to another in the villages wherein each class will run for two hours and thus 3-4 batches can be trained in a day.

The project is being implemented in association with NGO Aurobindo Chaudhari Memorial Great Indian Dream Foundation (GIDF).

At GAIL, Corporate Social Responsibility stands for continuing commitment for operating the core business in socially responsible way, complemented by investment in communities to produce an overall positive impact on society. The Company as a policy has allocated 1% of its net profit after tax (PAT) of the previous financial year for CSR activities. This overall budget is then distributed amongst seven specific thrust areas namely community development, drinking water, sanitation, educational aid, environment protection, healthcare / medical, infrastructure, literacy enhancement/ empowerment.
