Sensex ends lower; midcaps, smallcaps surge
MUMBAI: Benchmark indices ended lower on profit booking Wednesday but aggressive buying in broader markets saw a sharp rise in broader markets.
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 14,041.34, down 260.69 points or 1.82 per cent. The index touched an intra-day low of 13976.49 and high of 14405.51.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 4259.70, down 58.75 points or 1.36 per cent. The broader index touched an intra-day low of 4244.70 and high of 4362.85.
BSE Midcap Index closed 6.33 per cent higher and BSE Smallcap Index surged 9.08 per cent.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Metal Index was up 4.98 per cent, BSE Auto Index gained 4.26 per cent and BSE Oil&gas Index was down 2.43 per cent.
Biggest Sensex gainers were Tata Motors (19.15%), Tata Steel (12.74%), Hindalco Industries (7.35%), Mahindra & Mahindra (6.65%) and Jaiprakash Associates (5.83%).
DLF (-8.66%), BHEL (-6.22%), ICICI Bank (-6.14%), BHarti Airtel (-5.97%) and Sun Pharmaceuticals (-5.56%) were the losers.
Market breadth on BSE showed 2389 advances against 303 declines.
