Dull market…Sensex manages modest gains
Sensex gained 20 points or 0.12% at 16,731 while, Nifty gained 10 points to shut shop at 4,976.
The BSE Sensex gained 30 points or 0.2% at 16,741 after touching a high of 16,765 and a low of 16,610. The index opened at 16,650 against the previous close of 16,711. The NSE Nifty gained 10 points to shut shop at 4,976.
In Asia, the Nikkei in Japan slipped by 0.7% at 10,370 while Australia’s S&P/ASX ended lower by 0.5% at 4,693. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong was down 0.8% at 21,623. However, Shanghai SE Composite in China gained by 2.2% at 2,989.
In Europe, stocks were mixed. The FTSE in the UK was up 0.2%, The DAX in Germany was flat and the CAC 40 index in France was down 0.2%.
Coming back to India, among the BSE sectoral indices, the Auto index was the top gainer, gaining 2.2%, followed by the Realty index that was up 1.2%. The BSE Pharma index up 0.8% and the BSE Power index was up 0.8%.
However, BSE Bankex index was down 1% and BSE PSU index was down 0.2%. The BSE Mid-Cap index gained 0.4% and the BSE Small-Cap index added by 0.6%.
Among the 30-components of Sensex, 18 stocks ended in the green and 12 ended in the negative terrain. Among the major gainers were Maruti, Reliance Infra, JP Associates, SBI and Bharti.
On the other hand, ICICI Bank, Sun Pharma, RCom and Tata Motors were among the major laggards.
Outside the frontline indices, the big gainers in the broader market were HCC, Bharat Forge, Madras Cement, GE Shipping and Thermax. On the other hand, losers included SCI, Cummins India, MRPL, MMTC and GVK Power.
