Hi suzane,
Price |Open Interest |Interpretation
Rising|Rising |Market is Strong
Rising|Falling |Market is Weakening
Falling|Rising |Market is Weak
Falling|Falling |Market is Strengthening
(A very basic idea abt OI )

Hi suzane, Lets take an example. Consider 3 persons--- A, B, C.
On day1, A sells a contract to B (lets say Nifty Future). A=seller. B=buyer.
Volume of Nifty=1. Open Interest=1.
On day2, B sells the same contract to C. B=seller. C=buyer.
Volume of Nifty=2. Open Interest=1.
So, though the volume increases, Open Interest remains the same i.e, 1.
(This is because C replaces B as the buyer)
This example helps us to understand the co-relation between Open Interest and Volume.
NB. Another basic idea abt OI.
