Hi avik, First of all selling options is very dangerous and if u r wrong in ur calculation ur loss is unlimited. As far as margin is concerned it is same as required for stocks. for eg. If u buy 1 lot of put/call of Nifty then it will be (50 x ur buying price of put/call). but when u sell it will be (50 x total margin required for buying / selling of nifty which can be around 25000/30000 depending upon the broker) so buying put/call is cheaper and safe.

Better to have it in your pocket that watch it on the terminal. I tried to warn people about a possible jump in RCom, but unfortunately my post ended in spam. By the time it was allowed, Rcom jumped above the selling price and a profitable trade for some people like you is now running in a loss. Which option has the fastest time decay? This is an extremely important options trading question for all beginners and you are right to investigate its answer from the perspective of options moneyness.
The options greek that governs rate of time decay is "Theta". Generally, Theta decreases as options get more and more in the money or out of the money and as time to expiration increases. Yes, the nearer an option is to expiration, the higher its theta value would be and the faster its rate of time decay versus options with longer expiration. Because At the Money options have the highest Theta value compared with in the money options or out of the money options, the time value (extrinsic value) of at the money options generally decline faster than ITM or OTM options.
At the money options also contain the highest amount of extrinsic value which is also why its theta value will always be higher than ITM or OTM options which have a lot lesser extrinsic value. However, if you are looking to write options which you can profit from quickly before expiration, then writing OTM options would actually make quicker profit than writing ITM or ATM options. Why is this so?

Even though At The Money Options have the highest theta value and would have a much higher time decay than ITM or OTM options, options don't go through time decay in a linear fashion. In fact, OTM options would lose more of its extrinsic value further from expiration than ATM or ITM options. OTM options actually lose most of their value before their last 30 days whereas ATM and ITM options lose most of their value in their last 30 days. See a chart of the different rate of time decay.
As such, in order to maximize profitability some experts write options which has more than 30 days to expiration but is too risky.
At the money options generally have a higher rate of time decay and have a higher amount of extrinsic value available for time decay. However, as out of the money options go through time decay fastest more than 30 days away from expiration, that might be a better choice if you are writing options with longer expiration. Hi Robotguy / Be!ng Human - Have one idea. Let me know it works or correct me. Here it is step by step:

1. Find out overbought or oversold stocks.
2. Filter those by traded by volume. And pick up those stocks trade in good volumes.
3. Buy call or put options of next expiry of those respectively for handsome gain.

I think this idea works well. Because, overbought stocks should see some profit booking ahead and buying interest should be seen in oversold stocks.

Hi NH, Forget all this, new traders can follow RSI blindly without any doubt. The RSI ranges from 0 to 100 and is considered to be overbought once the RSI approaches the 70 or 70+, this means that it may be getting overvalued and is ready for a pullback. Likewise, if the RSI approaches 30, it is an indication that nifty or whatever the script may be getting in oversold levels and therefore ready for zooming up. When SR advised to buy 5500 call last time, nifty just kissed 30 in RSI and spikes up high from there. So, buy when nifty enters into over-sold zone similarly sell when nifty enters over-bought zone and leave it for 10-15 days. Sometimes nifty remains for a very long period like 1-2 month in between 70 and 30 in RSI and in that case the option prices melts.
BTW, CB is providing RSI chart for free of cost and thank to him. U can check in chartlinks.

Hi Akash, Its simple, suppose imagine nifty is at 5700 then 5600 call is considered to be In-the-money(ITM) option and similarly 5700 call is considered to be At-the-money(ATM) option and 5800 call is considered to be in Out-of-the-money(OTM) option.
So, safe traders prefer ITM options rather than ATM and OTM and risk traders who love to double-triple their amount prefer OTM (unless they are damn sure). Hope u get some idea now..

Hi vikrant, Yes, from August 10th to 25th nifty consolidates and fell suddenly but before going to over-bought zone nifty stayed in over-sold zone for just 4 days i.e., 24-27 of July month and it repeated in same way in 5,6th of Sep month. So in this case we need to average as long as it stays in these zones and book profits partially. One can not decide the time period of this over-bought and over-sold zones. As I said to NH, u can compare with bank nifty and top 5 heavy weighted stock in nifty.
