Seven auto stocks fell 0.71% to 3.92% at 14:37 IST on BSE, on worries of slowdown in sales after crude futures surged to reach its highest levels since October 2008.
Hero Honda Motors (down 3.92%), TVS Motor Company (down 2.33%), Maruti Suzuki India (down 2.28%), Tata Motors (down 2.79%), Mahindra and Mahindra (down 2.18%), Ashok Leyland (down 2.27%), and Bajaj Auto (down 0.71%), declined.
Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex was down 167.87 points, or 0.91%, to 18,270.44. The BSE Auto index lost 188.30 points or 2.19% to 8,426.60 and was the top loser from the 13 sectoral indices on the BSE.
The BSE Auto index had underperformed the market over the past one month till 21 February 2011, falling 7.46% compared with the Sensex's 2.99% decline. The index also underperformed the market in past one quarter, sliding 13.34% as against 5.86% decline in the Sensex.
Crude futures surged to around the highest levels since October 2008 in Asia Tuesday, 22 February 2011, as Libyan production falls amid violent protests and heavy crackdowns and other Middle Eastern producers seem unlikely to make up the difference. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures for delivery in March 2011 gained $7.64 a barrel to $93.84 a barrel in the Globex electronic session.
Fears of a hike in excise duty on automobiles in the Union Budget 2011-12 also weighed on auto stocks. Marketmen expect the government to raise excise duty specifically on diesel cars in the Union Budget 2011-12 to be presented in the Parliament on 28 February 2011.

Hi Option Trader, :) yes, hold it. seems like a gap down opening tomorrow. should be able to book profit tomorrow morning.
Hi learner, Hi learner, looking at US markets today, it seems we will open gap down. if nifty after opening holds onto 5400-5420 levels for some time, you can go with a 5400 call for quick gains. dont keep open position for long.
