Hi Kartik, South Korea’s central bank on Tuesday hiked its benchmark interest rate for the second time this year, as part of its efforts to rein in inflationary pressures in a rapidly expanding economy.
Stocks in Seoul sold off on the latest monetary tightening move while the won rose by the most in two weeks.
The Bank of Korea's policy board today raised the seven-day repurchase rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 2.5%, the monetary authority said in a statement in Seoul today.
The economists were divided in their view on the rate decision.
Today's move follows a quarter percentage point rate hike in July which lifted the base rate from a record low of 2%.
The Bank of Korea's policy statement dropped the phrase that it is "keeping an accommodative stance", reflecting the fact that it is now more concerned about rising prices than the rising value of the yuan.
