Euro Zone GDP grew 0.2% in Q2 (q-o-q) as compared to 0.8% in Q1. The Eurozone GDP slowed sharply as Germany’s growth was disappointing and France stagnated.
The GDP of Germany grew 0.1% in Q2 as compared to 1.3% in Q1 which was revised downwards(1.5% reported earlier). This is the lowest quarterly growth since Q1 2009.
Germany is the largest economy in Europe and its sharp deceleration hit the overall euro zone growth and it  also expected to complicate the efforts to resolve the ongoing debt crisis in Europe.
The growth for France, the second largest economy stagnated in Q2 compared to a growth of around 4% annualised in Q1.
Italy’s GDP also grew a meagre 0.3% in Q2 compared to 0.1% in Q1, Spain’s GDP also slowed to 0.2% in the second quarter, compared to a rise of 0.3% in Q1. The UK Economy also grew by 0.2% during the quarter.
Belgium grew 0.7%, Sweeden 1%, Finland 1.2% and Latvia grew 2.2% in the second quarter.
Greece’s economy contracted by 6.9% in Q2, it suffered a contraction of 8.1% in Q1.
Looking ahead it is important whether the core economies of Europe recover and gain momentum. With a slowdown in the external demand, fiscal tightening in the periphery euro economies and recent financial markets meltdown make the situation more sceptical and it is feared that Europe may enter into a recession.

Nifty began the week on a positive note but gave back all its intraday gains to slip in the red and end with a loss of 37 points at 5035. Amongst the sectoral indices the BSE Metal and Realty indices lost the most whereas BSE IT index ended the day with some gains of just under a percent. The Advance Decline ratio was negative at almost 3:7.

Nifty breached the support level of 5050 today and drifted lower to end the day with a loss of 37 points at 5035. It continues to appear weak and trades in bear territory. There is a possibility that it may retest the level of 4946 and even drift lower over the next few sessions. On the down side the range of 4890 to 4860 is a strong support for Nifty where there may be some sustained efforts for an up move
