MARKET COMMENTARY
Market opened lower on negative global cues but then showed amazing resilience to stage a smart recovery. Market went on to ignore lower than expected IIP numbers and reacted positively to excellent SBI numbers. In fact, SBI numbers came as a strong positive trigger and acted as catalyst for the markets. SBI gained almost 8% on huge volumes as it led the whole financial sector, particularly the PSU banks. BOI was another smart gainer as it posted more than 5% rise. Patni attracted contrarian buying as it was the only IT stock to post gains. OMCs continued to attract buyers while some other PSUs like Neyvelli and REC also emerged as major gainers. Tata Steel also came out with its quarterly numbers that were almost on expected lines and stock failed to excite both buyers as well as sellers. RIL continued to be drag on the indices and lost another 1% making it a seventh successive losing day. Other prominent losers were Educomp, Sesa Goa, Mphasis, Sterlie, Petronet , Aban and Zee.

Strong negative global cues were not enough to take Nifty lower than even the first support level of 5375-5380. Nifty made a low around 5375 in the opening minutes but than recovered sharply mainly in the later part of the session. Amazing run in banking stocks continues and it was the market heavyweight SBI that led the whole sector. Bankex posted a new high as it more than recovered all its yesterday’s losses. Some of the banking counters that still look good are Uco Bank, BOI, OBC, Can bank, Andhra Bank and Union bank. HDIL and IB Real could also move up. Neyvelli has given a close above 165 after about 7 months and sustained trades above 165 could take it to around 177 and 185. Some other bullish counters are GE Shipping, Sun Tv, GMR Infra (above 62.50), Dr Reddy, ONGC( above 1270) and HPCL.

Nifty has immediate support around 5375-80 and then around 5335-50 while resistance is likely around 5445-55. - BY PRATIBHUTI.
