Hi ddayal, Strangles are always safer bets when markets look uncertain and near strong Resistance / Supports. That way market will eventually breakout in one direction and head the next resistance / support. Strangles can be made with any option pair above and below the cmp of about similar prices. Higher priced strangles will have lower risk but will yield lower rewards too. Lower priced options will have higher risk but may yield higher rewards. So one should choose the pair that may give the best risk / reward ratio compared to the time for expiry.

Say Nifty is hovering near 5580 (strong resistance - will either break above it to 5685 or fallback 5480.). This is a good time to go for a strangle. The price of one option will fall where the price of other will increase and after a point, the increase becomes more than the fall and one starts getting profits.

Strangles can be made as under:
5700CE + 5500PE (cmp: about 87) can see about 110
5800CE + 5400PE (cmp: about 44) can see about 70
5800CE + 5300PE (cmp: about 31) can see about 45

if we take 5800CE + 5400PE:
if Nifty reaches 5685, 5800CE may go upto 50-55 whereas 5400PE may drop down to 15-20
if Nifty reaches 5480, 5400PE may go upto 60-65 whereas 5800CE may drop down to 5-10.
One starts earning good profits anytime after any one of the option surpasses the total cost of the strangle.

Hi shiva, Yes, decay will always be in options, that's the reason for putting the SL, incase the market keeps stagnating at the same levels for a number of days. However, always remember, the more the stagnation, eventually will lead to a stronger breakout and one may earn higher profits. :)
