European stocks finished lower on Monday after a volatile trading session, as banks lost ground while M&A deal news boosted the luxury-goods sector. Weakness in the US stocks also weighed on sentiment.
The Stoxx Europe 600 index slipped 0.4% to end at 280.73 while the blue-chip Euro Stoxx 50 index dropped 0.6%.
The UK’s FTSE 100 index dropped 0.3% to 5,973.78. The French CAC 40 index slipped 0.7% to 3,990.41. Germany’s DAX 30 index slipped 0.2% to 7,161.93.
Investors also kept an eye on rising oil prices. By the close of European trading, crude for April delivery gained 57 cents to $104.99 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract earlier hit an intraday high of $106.98 a barrel.
The escalating fighting in Libya suggests that the geopolitical turmoil will continue for some time, but a reasonable amount of spare capacity is still available to offset oil-production losses in Libya.
Separately, Moody’s downgraded Greece’s government-bond rating to B1 from Ba1 and assigned it a negative outlook. The move completes a review that started Dec. 16.
Moody’s said that Greece faces considerable difficulties with revenue collection, citing a risk that the nation may not meet criteria attached to continuing support from official sources after 2013.
The Greek stock market was closed on Monday for a public holiday.
Shares of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA advanced 1.3% after the luxury-goods group said that it would buy Italy’s Bulgari SpA, offering stock for the Bulgari family’s controlling stake and cash to minority shareholders.
Shares of Bulgari soared more than 59% in Milan, boosting Italy’s FTSE MIB index, which ended nearly unchanged. Other luxury stocks also posted solid gains.
Technology stocks were also strong. Alcatel-Lucent SA rallied almost 4% in Paris. The stock has surged 13% this month on talk of a possible takeover bid from a Chinese company.
