Ashok Leyland @ DEFEXPO 2008

This article was posted on Feb 18, 2008 and is filed under Press Releases

A pioneer in the design, development and manufacture of defence vehicles for over three decades, Ashok Leyland has been partnering the Indian Army in their vehicle fleet modernization.

Starting with 1200 Hippos in the 1970s, Ashok Leyland’s vehicles have been serving the armed forces in the GS role as dozer carriers, torpedo carriers and for mounting of sophisticated communication equipment. The Company has a Transfer of Technology Agreement with the Ordinance Factory Board, since the mid 1990s, for the production of the Stallion vehicle at the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, which is going strong.

Ashok Leyland is the largest provider of logistics vehicles to the Indian Army, with over 50,000 special purpose vehicles – Stallion 4×4, Light Recovery Vehicles, Water Bowzers, Crash Fire Tenders (6×6) and Truck Fire Fighters (4×2) doing duty with the defence forces.

LSV – LIGHT SPECIALIST VEHICLE

The LSV is an all-wheel drive (4X4), multi-purpose, all-terrain vehicle. With a power-to-weight ratio in excess of 25kW/tonne, it is a versatile performer even in the worst of terrains.

The fixed windscreen on the driver’s side enhances driver comfort without being exposed to the vagaries of nature while the drop-down windscreen on the left side, enables the commander to fire the LMG in a wide arc from his command post. A conveniently located trap door facilitates easy operation of the rocket launcher. This air/helicopter transportable vehicle also has a collapsible tent on the right side. Excellent communication is ensured by a powerful radio set with its own power source. The LSV can carry a crew of 4 besides the driver and the commander and can be made self-contained with sufficient rations, water, utensils, stove, bedding, etc.

The design of the vehicle lends itself for easy adaptation to a number of applications such as Observation Post, Reconnaissance and Surveillance vehicle, Ambulance, Field artillery tractor and a host of other applications. Both armoured and unarmoured bodies options are available.

The vehicle is currently undergoing trials at the Vehicle Research & Development Establishment, Ahmednagar, and also high-altitude, peak winter trials in Leh.

STALLION (6×6)

The Stallion 6×6 is a high-mobility alternative to the popular Stallion 4×4 in desert and sandy conditions. It is an all-wheel-drive version that meets GSQR requirements in terms of power-to-weight ratio and other parameters. It is powered by an 8-litre engine developing 260 HP @ 2500 rpm. It has a maximum torque of 745 Nm @ 1500 RPM.

The transmission consists of a hydraulically operated 380 dia Valeo clutch and a 6-speed synchromesh ZF gearbox (6S 850). A fully-built vehicle, it comes with a suitable load body for GS role and gives excellent mobility in extremely difficult underfoot conditions, including deserts. The Integral Power Steering reduces driver fatigue. The vehicle also has a hydraulic hoist for self-loading and unloading of ammunition, apart from a winch that can be used for self-recovery. It has a mud tracking capability of 330mm and can attain maximum speeds in excess of 90 kmph. Provision for external starting of the engine is available.

This vehicle has been specially developed for use in semi-desert / deserts. Though the vehicle has been offered for GS Role, variants will also be available: a Medium or a Heavy Recovery Vehicle, Water Bowser and various other applications such as kitchen containers, ambulances and mobile hospitals.

Following rigourous trials over varied terrains and climatic conditions, the Stallion 6×6 has been approved for induction into the Indian Armed Forces.

The Stallion 6×6 on display is fitted with the innovative Night Vision System that offers the driver Vision Enhancement during night and the ability to detect, recognise and identify the objects on road in zero light conditions. The system works on the thermal imaging principle and the cameras used are far infrared cameras that convert the thermal energy of an object into a displayed picture on the viewed screen. It is capable of working in extreme environments.

The electronic image can be viewed on a display screen conveniently positioned so that the driver does not have to take his eyes off the road to navigate. While navigation becomes easy, it also helps quick spotting of people or obstacles to avoid accidents. The Night Vision System enables the conduct of day/night operations. It also facilitates maneuverability in the most severely degraded visual conditions caused by smoke, fog, dust and such like for carrying out logistics as well as front line operations.

FIELD ARTILLERY TRACTOR (FAT) (6×6)

The upgraded model on display, with increased power and matched drivelines, is a common gun tower and is designed to meet the future needs of the Defence sector. With the Armed Forces the world over moving towards more sophisticated artillery, the FAT is ideal for towing the 155-bore artillery. The continuous all-wheel drive ensures high mobility across various terrains including sand. The CTI (Centralised Tyre Inflation) enables the driver to vary the tyre pressure to suit different terrains. There is also the option of run-flat tyres.

The FAT is powered by a 430 hp engine but engine options of up to 500 hp are available. It is fitted with cab and crew cabs (with air conditioning as option) that have been indigenously developed by Automotive Coaches & Components Limited (ACCL) – an associate company of Ashok Leyland. The option of an armoured cab is available too. The FAT has a hydraulic crane for self-loading and unloading. It is also fitted with a 16-tonne winch for recovery and self-recovery.

The vehicle will undergo trial evaluation by the Indian Army.
