IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL), a Tata Power and Government of Delhi joint venture company, which distributes electricity across North and North Western part of Delhi, has joined the IBM-led global Intelligent Utility Network coalition of few selected global utilities, aimed at accelerating the adoption of ‘smart grid’ technologies and business solutions through knowledge sharing.

The Intelligent Utility Network will transform the way power is delivered, managed and used by utilities around the world. The coalition members collaborate to enable rapid creation of solutions, use of open industry-based standards, and informed policy/regulation, which further drives the adoption of IUN technologies and solutions. It will also facilitate sustainable economic growth and help in reducing the carbon footprint.

Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Wadhwa, CEO and Executive Director, NDPL said, “India’s energy demand is growing rapidly and it is imperative to ensure a robust distribution network by adopting the latest technologies to sustain this. By being a part of this global coalition, NDPL will be engaging in a strategic effort to develop IUN solutions to enhance the efficiency and reliability of utility operations. We are also confident that the coalition will contribute actively in energy conservation through technological intervention and strategy thereby powering India’s growth efforts.”

Said Reji Kumar Pillai, Head – Energy and Utility industry, IBM India, “We are delighted to have NDPL join us in this strategic global coalition, which brings our shared vision to life. As the group grows to include other utility companies and partners, members have unique opportunities to apply new ways of thinking, new technologies and management strategies. This initiative provides a forum for exchanging ideas and best practices with the other strategic IUN partners.”

NDPL becomes the first Indian utility to join the global Intelligent Utility Network (IUN) coalition convened by IBM. The IUN Coalition also includes utilities from the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions.

Through this collaboration, NDPL & other coalition members will also have the opportunity to benefit from the learning of other major utility companies globally, gain access to best practices as part of the maturity model, provide inputs and guide standards development and access IUN architecture councils and gain potential benefit from project “jump starts” due to partner contribution

It will also help in creating local capabilities in India, which can be leveraged, by IBM and NDPL to assist other utilities for transformation through adoption of world-class technology and best practices.
