With a deployment of over 18,000 units,Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) has emerged as Microsoft Corporation’s largest Windows Vista customer in Asia. ONGC chose to implement Windows Vista due to its advanced security features, expected productivity benefits, search functionality and lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Specific features that ONGC expects to leverage include the security attributes built into Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) like Phishing Filters and Protected Mode; the User Account Control (UAC) functionality; optimized deployment capabilities across thousands of machines and the Green IT features including power management and energy saving.

To ensure a smooth transition and maximum returns, ONGC has also conducted company-wide trainings for employees. During these trainings, employee feedback on the benefits of Windows Vista has been extremely positive, with over 91% rating their initial experience of Windows Vista as very good or excellent.

Commenting on the implementation, Mr. M. Thyagaraj, Executive Director – Chief Information Services, ONGC Ltd. said, “As India’s largest Oil & Gas organisation with a pan-India presence, we depend extensively on technology to ensure smooth running of our core business. From our perspective, the desktop operating system is mission critical, and it was imperative for ONGC to deploy the best offering, that would meet requirements viz. security, ease of use, mobile computing and significant increase in employee productivity.” He further added, “Windows Vista, deployed recently on the new Laptops, has all these features and also provides us with immense energy saving capabilities – definitely a huge advantage in our business! Thanks to our Chairman and Managing Director Shri R. S. Sharma for the laptops scheme to our employees. Post this deployment, we expect employees’ mobility and productivity to increase by over five percent, which given the size of the deployment, will translate into sizable business benefits for us.”

Over 180 million licenses of Windows Vista have been sold worldwide, with India adoption alone crossing over two million copies. Key Windows Vista customers in India include DeBeers, Hotel Saravana Bhavan, Infosys, KRaheja Corp, Larsen & Toubro, Macawber Beekay, Satyam, Symphony Services and TCS. Worldwide, companies including Continental Airlines, EDS, University of California, Berkeley; Virgin Megastore and Washington Department of Licensing are benefitting significantly from implementing Windows Vista.

“India has always been a trend setter in technology usage and it is fantastic that one of the largest worldwide deployments of Windows Vista is at one of India’s Navratna companies. This implementation is a great testament to the value that Windows Vista brings to organisations by providing them with huge advancements in the areas of security, productivity, search and ease of use,” said Mr. Rajiv Srivastava, General Manager – Enterprise & Partner Group, Microsoft India.

Since the launch of Windows Vista, Microsoft has worked closely with its partner ecosystem to improve device and application compatibility, and improve the overall user experience. Today, over 2.5 million devices are supported by Windows Vista covering over 90 percent of all known devices. This is further expected to grow to 4.2 MM devices by 2010. Microsoft also recently released Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows Vista that includes quality improvements to enhance reliability, security and performance.
