NTPC Limited, India’s premier power generation corporation, received the Mother Teresa Award for the year 2006 for their laudable work to the society and the community they operate in.

This award was given away by Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at a function held at the Loyola Institute of Business Administration, Loyola College campus to Mr Sankaralingam, Chairman, NTPC Ltd., at a function yesterday.

Welcoming the gathering, P. Christie of Loyola stated: “LIBA instituted the award in 1998 in the name of Mother Teresa, to showcase a corporate which has incorporated social responsibility as part of its strategic vision and truly translated it into action, even while realizing its main objective of enhancing the wealth of the stockholders”.

Mr. N. Vittal, IAS (Retd), former Chief Vigilance Commissioner, GoI and Chairman of Jury, Mother Teresa Awards Committee read out the report of award committee.

Mother Teresa Award established by LIBA has emerged as one of the most prestigious awards for corporates to recognize their achievements in the areas of ethical governance.

Recipients of the award in the previous years include Titan Industries Ltd. – 1998, Tamilnadu News Print and Papers Limited (TNPL) – 1999, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. – 2000, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOC) – 2001, Shriram Ltd. – 2002, Polaris Software – 2003, TVS Motor Company Ltd. – 2004, Tata Steel Ltd. – 2005 and NTPC Ltd. – 2006. L&T & Sakthi Masala were also given Certificates of Commendation for their programmes promoting social welfare
