IPO Firecrackers yet to come

This article was posted on Oct 19, 2009 and is filed under IPO Views

There were a number of IPO’s that were listed in the first half of 2009, most of them underperformed the Markets. The IPO’s that fied to have a positive impact on the Markets were numerous some of them namely NHPC, Adani Power, Oil India, Euro Multivision Ltd, Excel Infoways Ltd, Mahindra Holiday’s..

Going by the IPO’s current performance, a IPO investor would find it risky to invest in the IPO’s that are to hit the market in the second half of 2009. IPO’s can give investors a handsome returns or make them loose large amount of money. The ones that mange to do well really make IPO investors invest in other forthcoming IPO’s.

The participation in IPO’s by Institutional investors has been positive in 2009, but its the retail investors that are shying out of IPO’s. The risk appetite of the retail investor is low. Rishabdev Technocable was the only IPO that saw retail subscription in double digits (16 times) in 2009, it listed around 27 and was dragged down to 15 levels in just 2 weeks of its listing.

On the other hand, Edserv Softsystems, whose IPO came out in February, has generated the maximum annual return of over 220 per cent, the stock still has been hitting upper circuits continuously form the past 10-15 days. It made a low of 25, and now traders at 222. Alkali Metals Ltd to managed to do well giving investors returns for more than 90% in 7 months.

Over the past few years, IPOs that delivered returns to investors include various sectors such as IT, Banking, Infrastructure.

The new IPO’s that are yet to make a debut to the market include GMR Energy, JSW Energy, Thinksoft Global Services Ltd, Reliance Infratel, Indiabulls Power, and more to come in the next few months.

Although the future of the new IPO’s looks bright, there are some worry signs as well. Most of the IPO’s so listed so far received good response as they are subscribe by more than 30 times in most of cases, but their performance has a different story to tell. Most of them (7 on 10) are trading at a discount to the issue price.
