A Bloomberg report said MTN and Bharti had reached a $24 billion preliminary agreement to buy each other's shares and quoted unnamed sources who said Bharti had sweetened its bid to buy 49 percent of MTN.

"The rumour that MTN and Bharti have reached a preliminary agreement, and the fact there'll be funds flowing into the country: that's why the rand broke 7.50/dlr," a Johannesburg-based rand dealer.

MTN and Bharti have been in negotiations since May 25 on a cash and share-swap deal aimed at an eventual full merger. The deadline for the talks has been extended twice, most recently to Sept. 30.

Peter Attard Montalto, emerging markets economist at Nomura International, said the MTN/Bharti deal would bring about $4-6 billion in inflows to South Africa but the bulk of it would likely through the central bank and not the market.

Last week, South Africa's National Treasury said MTN submitted an exchange control application for the proposed tie-up.

Another dealer said breaking the key 7.50/dlr level had triggered some stop losses and helped propel the rand.

"7.50/dollar was a key technical level and there's now stop loss selling after it broke that. A generally weak dollar and strong commodity prices have also helped," said Ion de Vleeschauwer, chief dealer at Bidvest Bank. (Reporting by Phumza Macanda, editing by Mike Peacock)
