Sensex closes below 14900; HDFC, Grasim down

MUMBAI: Indian markets ended in the negative terrain Wednesday as traders booked profits after a recent surge in equities. Capital goods, IT and auto space were down while realty stocks closed a little higher.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 14840.63, down 221.86 points or 1.47 per cent. The broader index hit a high of 15369.42 and low of 14786.58.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 4402.35, down 66.75 points or 1.49 per cent. The index touched an intra-day low of 4380.45 and high of 4557.95.

BSE Midcap Index was down 0.83 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index inched 0.15 per cent lower.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Capital Goods Index declined 1.98 per cent, BSE IT Index was down 1.78 per cent and BSE Auto Index fell 1.78 per cent.

Sensex losers comprised HDFC (-5.51%), Grasim Industries (-3.41%), BHEL (-3.38%), Jaiprakash Associates (-2.86%) and Tata Steel (-2.82%).

Gainers were ONGC (4.36%), DLF (1.51%), Sterlite Industries (0.93%), NTPC (0.72%) and Tata Motors (0.29%).

Market breadth on BSE was negative with 1362 declines against 1242 advances on BSE.
